Job Description

The Agronomist /CSA Advisor will be responsible for guiding adoption of climate smart technologies by farmers and SME’s. S/he will advise on specific climate smart interventions and extension systems in the business cases, and in the matching grants for innovation pilots and scaling. S/he will coordinate with the research and financial partners to contribute to cost/benefit analysis which will underpin the investments for effective climate resilient production systems. Support will be provided to SMEs and farmer groups/cooperatives on the most appropriate climate integration strategies, which enhances income of producers/agribusiness. The incumbent will contribute to the joint learning of smallholder producers and SME adoption of climate smart agriculture. S/he will coordinate, manage and supervise local extension providers in the business cases and pilot result based performance contracts. S/he will support as well Dutch technical expert missions to strengthen farmer organisations/cooperatives and SMEs in arable crop farming and management.

Key Responsibilities

Participate in the value chains and climate risk assessments of prioritised commodities (pulses, oilseed, potatoes and grains);
Co-design climate smart interventions based on farming systems approach and farmer typology and profiling;
Train and coach extension providers on climate smart adoption;
Supervise and evaluate performance of extension providers according to result-based payment scheme;
Coordinate and support (Dutch) technical missions on arable crop farming;
Support extension providers in delivering needs-based and practical trainings to male, female and young farmers;
Support the testing of profitable climate smart innovations with smallholder farmers in collaboration with the research partners;
Support SMEs in the promotion, market uptake and scaling of evidence-based climate smart technologies;
Support the integration of renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions in the farming systems and value chains;
Coordinate the provision of tailor made information to producers and SME’s on crop suitability, climate risks and cost effectiveness/viability of interventions;
Advise on the implementation of business cases and the co-investment fund;
Identify and analyse the barriers for the uptake of climate smart technologies and formulate recommendation to SME’s, financial institutions and government;
Contribute to learning on scaling CSA;
Contribute to improved service delivery to farmers by cooperatives in collaboration with consortium partners;
Broker and create improved linkages between farmers, cooperatives, public and private service providers, SME’s and other relevant stakeholders

Qualifications

A relevant academic qualification in agronomy and/or farming systems
Minimum of 7 years of experience of working in Agronomy advisory;
Knowledge of technical aspects of priortitised commodities (pulses, oilseed and grains) and farming systems in east Africa;
Experience in famer extension and SME advising;
Experience in climate smart agriculture design and financial analysis of climate smart technologies;
Experience working with female entrepreneurs and gender integration approaches;
Knowledge climate smart innovation and farmer adoption;
Experience with result-based service provision and farmer organisation strengthening;
Excellent communication (written and oral), reporting and presentation skills;
